Museum Leaders in Training program at the VMFA

M.LiT
is a 12-week, teen program in which teens acquire career development and leadership training from staff and instructors at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Teens explore museum careers and advise in the development of teen programs. With the help of guest lecturers and VMFA staff, teens learn teambuilding, research, and occupational skills and build relationships with peers, mentors, and museum professionals.

The 2016-2017 curriculum will focus on archival documentation. Teens will attend weekly sessions that include lectures exploring the various approaches to archiving across museum departments and hands-on workshops that illustrate the strategies professionals employ when documenting and storing works of art and other media for long-term preservation in a collection. Participants will work together to create an original archive of Virginia artist, Willie Anne Wright, and present their research held at the program’s conclusion.

Richmond-Metro area teens in grades 8-12 are eligible to apply for the highly-competitive program. Up to 20 teens will be selected to participate based upon their artistic merit, writing ability, teacher recommendations, regional demographics and leadership qualifications.
