2016-2017 Fine Arts II Syllabus

Welcome to Art II​
This advanced course of study is designed to expand the students’ knowledge and skills in art through a variety of

in-depth approaches.  The course requires a high degree of cognitive activity that is both intellectual and emotional.  Students will develop the power to express themselves in terms of their identity and their relationship to the world around them.  Art II students are expected to take responsibility for their learning through acquisition of effective working practices.  Students will begin the course with more structured assignments that will introduce them to a variety of media and techniques.  As the student becomes more technically proficient and focused on an artistic vision, they are expected to generate their own ideas, processes, and solutions.  The goals of the course are to explore and critically respond to the aesthetic qualities of art, the relationship between form and function along with the social and cultural meanings of art.  By the end of the year, students will have built a mature body of work that clearly defines a personal vision and demonstrates a technical command and appropriate use of materials.

Classroom Responsibilities

Students enrolled in art are expected to acknowledge and follow the Hanover County Code of Conduct. The art classroom requires special considerations and students will be expected to handle equipment, tools, and materials in a responsible and safe manner. Mutual respect for student and teachers using the art studio is paramount to learning and production.  Students are expected to be in their seat for the first and last bell each day.  All students are also expected to complete and turn in work on time and be an active participant every class period. Each student is responsible for his or her studio space and materials. Duties will be assigned to keep the studio organized and clean. As needed, parents will be asked to assist student in meeting the classroom and school expectations.

Required materials
  • $15 Art Fee
  • #2 Pencils and Big Erasers– at all times!! Not mechanical pencils
  • Sketchbook – for weekly journal entries, collecting imagery, sketching, research and planning
Optional Materials
  • Drawing Pencil Set  (6B, 4B, 2B, HB, 2H) and your own eraser
  • Prismacolor Pencil Set (36 pk)
Grading Guidelines
Projects = 60% of the nine weeks grade (150pts)
– 2 Studio Projects worth 75 points each
Here are the 5 C’s of Art Assessment:
A. Content - all that is contained or expressed (15pts)
B. Craftsmanship - made with skill, handling of the medium to achieve the chosen effect (15pts)
C. Creativity - inventive, original, distinctive, individual style (15pts)
D. Communication - the visual message conveyed (15pts)
E. Composition - purposeful arrangement of the elements and principles of design (15pts)

Journal Assignments & Daily Participation = 40% of the nine weeks grade (100pts)
Every day you will be working in your sketchbooks for assigned journal entries, sketching ideas, collecting imagery, taking notes, daily reflections, and critiques.  These will be collected at least twice a nine weeks to be evaluated.  Daily journal entries are worth two points each (2=Complete, 1=Incomplete, 0=Missing).  Participation points are also worth two points a day and will be reduced for anyone not making use of the entire class period (2=Full Participation, 1=Half Participation, 0=No Participation). 

Total Nine Weeks Evaluation = 250pts
Attendance Policy
If you are absent from a class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and complete the work.  Students with “excused” absences will receive an equal number of days to complete assignments as long as it does not extend beyond the grading period.  For students with “unexcused” absences, they will not receive participation points for that day.  All of the required work must still be completed, but it will be evaluated on a reduced scale. Project due dates are told weeks in advance to prepare students. I am available after school, but do not plan to stay after because you decided not to use your time wisely in class.  My door will always be locked when the bell rings, which will require you to get a pass from the Tardy table if arriving late. Consequences are as follows: 1 Tardy = warning, 2 Tardies = call home, 3 Tardies = Detention.

Late Work Policy
Late work will be reduced by 10% for every single day it is turned in beyond the deadline.  Therefore, if students wait until the next class period, they will only earn 80% or 20 out of 25pts.  Homework that is brought in more than two weeks late will be awarded 0 points.  Anyone not prepared to work in class will be given an alternate assignment for their participation.  

Let’s talk electronics
BYOD:  Per School Board Policy, each teacher has sole discretion within the classroom as to when and how personal technology devices will be used.  Teachers also have the authority to limit and prohibit the use of these devices at any time.  Students are expected to abide by these decisions.
Please know that I will ALWAYS want to talk to you the beginning and end of class. Always.  Do not come into the studio with your ears plugged with any electronic device. Part of the creative process involves interacting with other students (and with me!), but there are other times where it is perfectly fine to be in your own head and space. I promise I will let you know when!  Your electronic device must have headphones or ear buds. The primary reason you’ll want your device is to listen to music as you create work. Please know, your device should only enhance your work ethic and not take away from it. If your device is distracting you, or others, then I will take it from you. Taking pictures of other students, or their work is not permitted in the studio. It is your responsibility to keep your device within your possession.  Do not charge your device in my classroom!

Plagiarism and Academic Honesty
Your ideas and your work should be your own.  Plagiarism is defined as using words or ideas from an outside resource without proper citation.  The outcome of plagiarism at Atlee High School is a 0 on the assignment and an office referral. 

Get Involved
All art students are encouraged to participate in our Art Guild, which is an after school club that meets once a month (specific Thursdays) throughout the year. All of our studios (Art, Photo & Graphics) are open for students to work on their own projects, or participate in club sponsored activities between 3:30-5pm.  Students who wish to be a part of National Art Honor Society must be in their 2nd year of an art course and have maintained an A or B average. They are also required to attend ten hours of Art Guild meetings and must complete two hours of art-related community service hours. Please see the parent letter attached for more information.
