Gallery Visits    -   Required Each Nine Weeks!

YOUR MISSION – Walk through the gallery to make a general observation of the show.  Pick one piece of work to focus on that could be a useful part of your investigation and help inform your studio work.  Reflect on the questions below in your Journal, while explaining exactly how it connects to your own artistic visions.

TIPS
Note the name of the museum or gallery
Include the postcard from the show or go on-line for an image
Make sure to note the artist, title, year, medium, and size from the artwork label
Bring a pencil, eraser and colored pencils for sketching the work

REFLECTION QUESTIONS – Suggestion: Pick about 5 to concentrate on, including the last question.  Do not include numbers or write out the questions, just provide in depth reflections on these inquiries.
  • Why did you choose this gallery show to visit?
  • What piece in the show stands out to you? Why?
  • Describe the work in great detail. Pretend you are describing it to someone who cannot see it!
  • Draw an intense study of the piece. This is to practice and strengthen your skills in addition to documenting your experience.
  • What elements of art are important in this piece?
  • What principles of art are reflected in this piece?
  • What is the artist trying to communicate to the viewer? Answer this before you read the artist statement. Then read the statement and compare and contrast the artist's intent to what you wrote.
  • What choices did the artist make to support their message?
  • What risks did the artist take?
  • Why is the work of art significant to the show, medium, artist, art world, culture, history, etc?
  • What is your overall opinion and observation of this show?
  • Write a biography about the artist who created the work.  Talk about his/her life, where they worked. Include something about the philosophy of the artist (what they try to do/say do in the art)

How will you use what you learned in your own work? (THIS ONE IS MANDATORY!)

Questions on Curatorial Practice

  • Do you see any site specific art, made in response to the location? How is it specific to the site?
  • What different methods of display can you observe? How is art hung, placed, lit, spaced and otherwise displayed?
  • Do you see any exhibitions that explore a theme or thread? Describe how the work is related through exploration of ideas. Describe how work is related through visual connections.
  • Is your experience as the viewer influenced by the way the work is presented?
  1. Are there any occasions in which you are drawn in to participate or interact with the work?
